Chapter Seventeen

Ben was so quiet on our way back, I had to keep looking behind me to check that he was still there.

“I can’t believe I was so naïve,” he mumbled. “I really believed him. Everything I’ve worked for is a lie.”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” I said.

“What else is there for me to do? I’ve spent my life trying to emulate him, thinking he was the most altruistic person ever.” He made a throaty, grunting sound. “All along, he was just serving himself.”

“And the family. I’m sure he means to share his research with his offspring.”

Ben laughed. It was a hard laugh. “So, I get to live forever and watch all the people around me die a slow death.”

It was difficult to feel sorry for him. He’d lived a privileged life, lacking in nothing. I couldn’t help thinking that the good he’d been doing, while convincing himself that it was for the good of everyone, might just have been enough to ease his own conscience. Now that he knew it was all for show, meant only to keep the masses happy, I couldn’t pity him. After all, he’d used that privilege to justify killing all those Rejs.

But I had a part to play, too.

“I feel so useless,” he continued.

I stepped in front of him, making him stop in his tracks. “Do you want to do something about it?” I had to try. Maybe somewhere in this privileged brain, there lurked a modicum of goodness.

He pondered my question, chewing on the side of his lip. “If it saves my mother, then yes, I do.” The determined look in his eye told me he was telling the truth. “But what can we do in one night? After tomorrow morning, we’ll be prisoners, watched at all times.”

“I have an idea,” I said, treading carefully. I couldn’t reveal too much because he still hated the Rejs, and he couldn’t know that they were already in the Greens, about to wreak their havoc. “If we can get proof of R.L.’s actual work, show the people here in the Labs and in the Geos that Farrow Corp isn’t concerned about their future, but only R.L.’s and his inner circle, it might be enough to stir them into action. At the very least, they’ll want to remove R.L. from his position of power.” I didn’t add that the people in the Geos already knew this and were already on board with the plan. But maybe, if I could make Ben think this was all his idea, carrying out the plan would be easier.

Ben’s eyes narrowed in thought as we continued our path back to our apartment. Two clones walked past us. Dressed in the silver uniforms that matched their hair, they walked with their eyes forward, with no expression.

Involuntarily, I gasped.

“What is it?” Ben asked.

“Nothing,” I said. Of course, the male clones all looked alike, and I hadn’t checked the nametag, but for a split second, I’d thought one of those who’d just passed us was Dax.
